Violence in twentieth-century Mexico has a history; it is not the product of national character or an inevitable result of state weakness. In this talk, Pablo Piccato will examine different kinds of violence, situating them in time and explaining the justifications and practices that made them possible and enduring. Understanding the gendered logic of violence is key to understanding its continuities, but also civil society’s response against it.
Professor Pablo Piccato’s research focuses on modern Mexico, particularly crime, politics, and culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His most recent book is Historia mínima de la violencia en México [A Brief History of Violence in Mexico] (Mexico City, 2022), translated by Quentin Pope and published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2025.
