The Labor and Working-Class History Association (LAWCHA) presents a book talk with Katherine Johnston, historian and author of the book, The Nature of Slavery: Environment and Plantation Labor in the Anglo-Atlantic World.
Johnston is an assistant professor in Montana State University's Department of History and Philosophy's College of Letters and Science. Her new book, “The Nature of Slavery," argues that slaveholders fabricated claims to serve their own interests by exploring how their argument took root in the public imagination. She demonstrates the ways that a language of nature imbued racist theories with authority, laying the groundwork for environmentally racist practices.
