On March 1st, 2024, CLAS hosted another successful reach symposium featuring presentations from Graduate students and Faculty.
Most presenters were graduate students who received CLAS small grant almost a year ago. The research symposium was a great opportunity for them to share how they used those funds to conduct research further. Through the funding, one grant recipient was able to collect oral histories from campesino associations in Miranda, Corinto, and Caloto, norte del Cauca, Colombia, with the intention of building a communal archive for popular education programs. Another student researched the Archivo General de la Nación (AGN) in Bogota, Colombia, and explored the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collection to focus on naturalization letters of Chinese migrants from 1920-1980. Many more interesting topics were discussed during the symposium.
The presentations this year ranged from topics related to Communities, Rural Society, Environment, Politics, and Policies as they relate to Latin America. This year's speakers represented different departments throughout Rutgers, including the Department of History, Department of Geography, Department of Anthropology, and Mason Gross School of Arts and School of Criminal Justice.
