Professor Shantee Rosado has co-written a book with four other Black feminist sociologists who form the group The Cardi B Collective. The book, titled The Sociology of Cardi B: A Trap Feminist Approach, creatively engages with the topics of Black and Latinx femininity, motherhood, sexuality, racial and ethnic identity, and political engagement through the life and artistic work of Hip Hop artist Cardi B. By centering the lived experiences and social positions of the Black women Cardi represents, the authors expand Black feminist scholarship and emphasize the importance of Black women defining themselves for themselves.
The Cardi B Collective is comprised of Black women sociologists who are scholars in race scholars, feminist scholars, pop culture scholars, civic engagement scholars, family scholars, and gender scholars. By focusing on how Cardi B uses her own sociological perspective to discuss race, feminism, motherhood, politics, and popular culture, they tapped into their areas of expertise as sociologists to develop a theoretical framework informed by trap feminism that focuses on hood chicks’ contributions to knowledge production.
Additionally, the Cardi B Collective provided a note on their co-authorship and how it disrupts academic authorship norms:
"Our names are listed alphabetically because we all contributed to each chapter of the book through conceptual discussions and editing...With our book, we provide an example of what a collective co-authorship project can look like within Black Sociology, Black Feminism, and the production of scholarships within the academy."
