The Center for Latin American Studies congratulates Laura De Moya-Guerra, a PhD candidate in History at Rutgers University, on her participation in the XVII Seminario Internacional de Estudios del Caribe, held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, from June 9 to 13, 2025.
De Moya-Guerra presented her paper, “Peligro en la lavandería: migración china, raza y nación en Colombia,” examining how local concerns about Chinese laundries on Colombia’s Caribbean coast in the early twentieth century evolved into racialized state policy. Her research highlights the intersections of race, migration, and nation-building in Colombia, situating the national experience within broader hemispheric debates on anti-Chinese sentiment.
Organized by the Instituto Internacional de Estudios del Caribe at the Universidad de Cartagena, the Seminario is one of the region’s premier academic gatherings, drawing scholars from across the Caribbean to engage with pressing historical and contemporary issues.
