2023: El Macizo Colombiano: Democracy, Violence and Popular Movements in El Cauca Colombiano
In October 2023 Rutgers hosted Miguel Fernandez. We learned about the environmental, agrarian, and social issues facing peasants, Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in Colombia. Miguel Fernández is a coordinator of the Committee for the Integration of the Macizo Colombiano (Comité de Integración del Macizo Colombiano - CIMA), a network of peasant organizations that work in defense of their territory and identity. He currently serves as a high-level officer of the Central Union of Workers (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores de Colombia - CUT) in the Cauca department and is a regional delegate to the National Roundtable for Guarantees (Mesa Nacional de Garantías), a process mandated in the 2016 peace accords between the government of Colombia and the FARC armed insurgency.
Miguel spoke about the situation of human rights in Cauca, the environmental effect of multinational interventions, and the impact of the armed conflict on the communities. November 2023: El Monte: Narratives, Aesthetics, and Afrodiasporic Spirituality in the Contemporary Caribbean

On the 70th anniversary of the publication of El Monte (1954) by Cuban author and ethnologist Lydia Cabrera, Rutgers University, Baruch College (CUNY), and the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami, invite scholars, graduate students, and social and religious activists to discuss pressing issues around Afrodiasporic spirituality and ethnomedicinal technologies in the cultures of the Hispanic Caribbean.
Often taken as a reference text for those initiated into Santeria and other spiritual traditions, El Monte has become not a book but a guiding concept or code to read the evolution of Afrodiasporic culture in the Hispanic Caribbean. The 70th anniversary of this seminal book and the publication of its first translation into English (Duke University Press, May 2023) demands a fresh look at its contributions and the fields it seeded. This conference will offer a unique opportunity to reflect, from multidisciplinary perspectives, on the complexities and challenging power of Afro-Caribbean agency.

April 2023 Independent Publishing: Perspectives From The Hispanophone World
We are pleased to invite you to the "Independent Publishers Colloquium: Perspectives from the Hispanic World" to be held at Rutgers-New Brunswick, NYU, CUNY, Columbia, and Recirculation/Word Up Books from April 12 to 15, 2023.
During those days we will hold a series of conversations with publishers from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain about the practices, challenges and experiences associated with the universe of independent publishers. The colloquium is an invitation to generate a sustained and plural dialogue and examine the profound transformations that the publishing industry has undergone in recent years.
The panels with editors, the workshops and the tribute to Sergio Chejfec will be free and open to the public, as well as the book fair that will take place on April 15 at "Recirculation", a new project of the Word Up community bookstore, located at 876 Riverside Drive (& 160th St.) Washington Heights, NYC 10032.

Spring 2023: Indigenous Voices: Latin America Film Festival
I
In our current global situation of climate change and environmental catastrophe, many environmental humanities scholars are turning to indigenous ontologies to seek out answers and guidance. The five movies that we curated for the festival showcase narratives from indigenous communities from several Latin American countries and portray their struggles and strategies of survival.
